We have been studying probability in math. After looking at many different spinners, we have moved onto looking at the probability of dice. Students worked in pairs and were each given a different kind of dice. The students recorded their roll 20 times on the sheet below.
After recording all the 20 rolls, pairs graphed only rolls of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 on the sheet below. As you can guess, not all dice produced many rolls of 1-6, while others rolled only 1-6.
Then, students had to guess which graphs matched with which dice. It was an enjoyable probability lesson as the students got to practice it hands-on!

Studying Antarctic Animals
Our class just read Antarctic Ice and is now beginning our study of Antarctic animals. The students chose between the following animals: seal, shark, orca, blue whale, walrus, and penguin. Of these animals, the shark and penguin are the most popular.
The students have been using books and articles as a part of their research. The three areas they are looking for information in are Appearance, Habitat, and Interesting Facts. As we have done various types of research this year, the students were given the freedom to choose how to take their notes. Many students have used brainstorm webs to organize their thoughts, while others are taking notes in bullet points or just stream-writing their facts.
The next step is to transfer their research notes into rough drafts of a description nonfiction writing piece. We will be focusing on writing clear topic sentences.
As students finish their final drafts, they will have the opportunity to produce create projects about their Antarctic animals. Here is a list of the projects from which the students will choose.

Name Art
We mixed Art & Writing! Students wrote their names in cursive with a black crayon in the middle of the page and then made cloud outline over and over and over again. After all the black lines are drawn, students begin to add color. They all turned out very cool!

Oogly Lady
We had the Oogly lady visit our third grade today. The students made their very own clay monster. They had so much fun making the monsters, creating them just the way they wanted them to look. It was so fun to see their creativity!
The students will brainstorm and write a narrative about their Oogly monster. Most of their stories share how they and their Oogly became best friends or how their Oogly will take over the world. We include these stories and a picture of each student with their Oogly into their Bare Books, a scrapbook of their writings from 3rd grade.

Dr. Seuss Cafe
It's that time of year again! Our 3rd and 4th graders are the waiters/waitresses in our school's Dr. Seuss Cafe. During their Library time, students from the younger grades (PreK-2) come in and have a Dr. Seuss book read to them. They love it so much and enjoy their time showing off their fluency and reading skills to the younger students. We have picture menus for the little ones to choose from and centerpieces for the tables as decorations.
And, of course, they love that they get a COOKIE! Thank you to our local Price Chopper for donating the cookies!

Special Guest
My sister, brother-in-law, and baby niece Mila are in town from California. Today, they visited my classroom. It was a antibacterial festival and then all hands on the little one. Mila was okay with all the attention for a little while, then it got a bit overwhelming for her. She was definitely the center of attention! Then, she went on a tour of our school to see all the teachers.
