Valentine's Buckets & Teacher Gifts

My students decorated large cans (recycled from our cafeteria!) to hold their Valentines. They loved adding their own personal touch to them and lots of stickers didn't hurt either!
Our third grade team gave the students glow bracelets for Valentine's Day. I really like to trend of not always giving candy out with the cards.

Writing Dialogue with Conversation Hearts

Our students have been working on adding dialogue into their narratives. In order to both practice our new skill and get into the Valentine's Day spirit, we wrote dialogue with conversation hearts.

The students were given two conversation hearts (I went through and sorted out the "Kiss Me", "First Kiss", "Love Me", etc.) and had to build a dialogue from them. We practiced together first.

Then the students got busy with their own conversation heart dialogue. They rough drafted in their composition journals and completed a final draft. Students created a drawing scene to go with their dialogue. Then we jazzed them up with some fancy scissors and festive cardstock.

Happy Valentine's Day

After having cupcake & cookie parties for many years, the third grade team at Moonlight decided to reinvent our Valentine Party. We have it in the morning right when the kiddos get to school. It is a breakfast party, with pancakes, bacon, fruit, muffins, milk, and juice! The students absolutely LOVE it! Who wouldn't want to have breakfast in the classroom!

The students made Valentine cans this year so hold all their classmates' Valentines. We also played Valentine Minute to Win It in which the students had 60 seconds to complete their challenge. It was so fun watching them do this!

Do You Love Me?

We read the books Mama, Do You Love Me? and Papa, Do You Love Me? today. After reading, we discussed how people show others they love someone. Is it a hug & kiss, is it doing something without being asked, is it listening them?

I know my parents love me because they help me.

I know my parents love me because they love me and care for me when I am hurt or sad.

I know my mom loves me because she cooks me dinner.

I know my parents love me cause they hug me & kiss me & give me presents & I love them.

Each student then made part of our Heart Quilt describing how they know their mom/dad/parents love them. Their reasons were wonderful (and sometimes funny) to read!

Friday Art: Valentine's Day Buckets

On Friday, during Art, students were hard at work creating and decorating their Valentine Buckets. We asked the kitchen staff to safe large cans for us. We look the veggie label off and added contraction paper, then the students personalized their own bucket for the Valentines on February 14th!

They all look great!

What Do You Wish It Would Rain?

After reading Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and The Day It Rained Hearts, our class brainstormed other fun things it could rain in a fictional world. The students filled in the thought "I wish it would rain ___________, because __________________. Then students added an illustration.

I wish it would rain video games because it will be fun to sit on the couch and play them all day.

I wish it would rain video games because video games costs a lot of money and (I'd) get them for free!

I wish it would rain puppies & trampolines because when the puppies fall they will bounce off the trampoline & be safe. I want the puppies to rain because I love puppies.

I wish it would rain dogs because they are so fun to play with and I would get to have my own pet dog.

I wish it would rain guitars because I could jam with all of them.
