Paper Lantern Fish

I'm linking up with 4th Grade Frolics for Monday Made It!

To go along with my fish theme, I made some paper lantern fish to hang above my desk area. I had a heck of a time finding some sphere paper lanterns! But I finally found some cute ones at Michaels on sale (even better!).

Then, I got to work making these lanterns into fish! I used my scotch tape dispenser as a template for the eyes and just free-handed the fish tails. I used rubber cement to attach the eyes and tails to the lanterns. This was probably the hardest part of the project. I didn't want to rip through the paper, so I had to press and hold it on for a while to get it to stick. Let them dry overnight and they are good!
Use some fishing line (ha!) to hang them up and now you have a cute fishie addition to your classroom!

Classroom Library - Get Hooked On Books!

Here's my first Monday Made It! I'm linky up with 4th Grade Frolics for Monday Made it. I know, I know, it's July and I'm just now making something. I am trying to enjoy my summer. Today, I tackled my classroom library decoration! After working on my library organization, now I wanted to make it pretty :)

I found the great idea below for my library inspiration on Pinterest.
Under the Sea Reading Corner classroom display photo - Photo gallery - SparkleBox
I bought two blue plastic table clothes from Hobby Lobby to create the waves along the wall. This is my "before" picture. Or as close as it could be, I forgot to take one before I got started.
After the waves were along the wall, I added fish with book titles on them. It goes well with the large clip art on the opposite wall that says "Get Hooked on Books" with a boy fishing. I hope my students get hooked on the books in my library! I have a couple beach chairs that the students can sit in to read their favorites.

What Did They Say!? - A Linky Party!

I am linking up with A Turn to Learn with a What Did They Say?! linky party!

What Did They Say!?

Our class was on a restroom break and I was outside the boys' restroom door making sure there wasn't any funny business going on (you know 3rd grade boys!). When, I hear one of my boys yell, "Hey! Somebody get Mrs. Brown! There's no toilet paper in here!"

Now, I'm not sure what he wanted me to do about it, but at least he was asking for help! The story continues...

I asked one of the boys washing his hands to "be a friend" and help out the boy with no toilet paper. So what did he do? Runs over to the paper towels (ouch!). About this time, the boy in the stall yells, "Nevermind!! I'll just ask {another boy in stall next to him} for some toilet paper!"

I had to walk away because I couldn't contain my laughter any longer!

Spring Break Bucket List

I am linking up with Brigid's Daily Lesson Log to write my Spring Break Bucket List!

  1. Organize the basement! It is a pit of disarray and needs to be tackled. Our town has a city wide garage sale the first weekend in May and I need to sort through the madness.
  2. Sleep in!! Should that have been first?!
  3. Get mentally prepared for assessments. We start Kansas State Assessments the Tuesday we return to school. The kids are prepared academically, we just need to calm their fears of their first state assessment.
  4. Catch up on blogging and reading blogs
  5. Make some delicious Pinterest meals & desserts!
  6. Find awesome resources through TeachersPayTeachers for our fourth quarter indicators. Gotta get those 3rd graders ready for fourth grade and for the coming Common Core next year!

Dice Probability

We have been studying probability in math. After looking at many different spinners, we have moved onto looking at the probability of dice. Students worked in pairs and were each given a different kind of dice. The students recorded their roll 20 times on the sheet below.

After recording all the 20 rolls, pairs graphed only rolls of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 on the sheet below. As you can guess, not all dice produced many rolls of 1-6, while others rolled only 1-6.

Then, students had to guess which graphs matched with which dice. It was an enjoyable probability lesson as the students got to practice it hands-on!
