Fractions - Number Line

We have upped our fraction instruction this year to prepare our students for their 4th Grade CCSS curriculum next year. Not only can my students write and recognize fractions, we are now ordering and comparing fractions. Today we put them in a number line.

I drew a blank number line and had students do the same on their whiteboards. Student came up and drew from a pile of fractions and taped it where they thought it belonged on the number line. The class voted (thumbs up/ thumbs down) if they agreed with there the student placed the fraction. Then the students explained why they placed their fraction wherever they did. I loved hearing their reasoning behind the placement. I'm excited to see them grow as fraction fanatics!

Fraction Museum

Today, our classroom was transformed into a Fraction Museum!

Students were asked to use classroom materials to create fractions for their classmates to figure out. Each student had a piece of paper to travel around the room finding and comparing fractions. The students had so much fun making these fractions and trying to "trick" their classmates!

Name Art

For Art today, we mixed in a little Math. The students created name art with their first names, then found the fractions of the colors they used.

We practiced writing in block letters to take the curves out of our first names. The students were given 10x10 grids in which to write each letter. After they had planned out each letter in pencil, we added a little color! The students colored in their letters block by block. They chose one color for their letters and one color for the background.

We cut out the letters and mounted them. Then the students counted the squares of each color and labeled the fractions. Because it is a 10x10 grid, the denominator for each fractions is 100, making the subtractions a bit easier :)

Even More Fraction Fun!

After we got a handle on fractions earlier in the week, we wanted to have more fraction fun!

On Tuesday, we made fraction kites. Each student decorated a 5 by 5 square in whatever solid colors they wanted. The only rules were they had to use at least two colors and at max, they could use five colors.

After the students decorate their squares, they labeled the explosion cloud with the fractions represented on their kite. Then, the students cut out their squares and turn them into kites. Students create a background for their kite. The students got pretty creative!

Fraction Fun

Today we have some Fishy Fraction Fun!
Students have fish cut outs and color them red, yellow, orange, green, and purple. They need six of each fish.
Then the students create fractions on their fish bowls. The following are fraction situations given to the students:
-Place four fish in the bowl. One-half of the fish should be purple and one-half of the fish should be red.
-Place three red fish and one green fish in the bowl. What fraction represents the green fish?
-Place two orange fish in the bowl, one-half of them below the house and one-half above the house.
-Place six fish in the bowl. Put two-sixth of the fish in the house and the rest floating in the water. What fraction describes the fish floating in the water?
-Place three fish in the bowl- one in the house and two in the plants. What fraction of the fish are in the plants?

The students were then asked to make their own fractions for me to check. After they created four original fractions with their fish, they received a wonderful treat GOLDFISH CRACKERS!
