Math Egg Hunt

We went on a Math Egg Hunt! The students went hunting for 24 eggs all over our classroom. In each egg was a math problem to solve. They had scratch paper to work the problems and an answer sheet to record their answers. After the students hunted and solved math equations for a while, we went through each egg and solved the problems. It was a great way to both review and get them up and moving!

I Believe That We Will Win!

Our students start their Kansas State Assessment tomorrow, so we as a grade level and staff (along with the rest of the school!) pumped them up!! Out theme this year is

MOONLIGHT SOCCER STARS: I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!!

All the 3rd and 4th graders started the assembly by running through the game tunnel our district high school uses for games.

Then, we were treated to the stars of the high school soccer teams. Let me tell you, they know some awesome tricks!
Our principal donned a goalie uniform and had third & fourth teachers try to make a goal. After we each tried, we all went at once!

We learned the Sporting KC chant: I Believe That We Will Win and practiced it until we were blowing the roof off the gym!! My hubby was our wonderful drummer for the chant.

Oh, and we had a Harlem shake by the K-2 teachers!

Here's a pic with my outstanding 3rd grade team!

Cause & Effect Practice

Today we did a quick Cause & Effect lesson. Students used their whiteboards to show me their answers. I love using this EPR strategy as I can see what everyone is thinking. Then, I know which questions we need to talk a bit more about.

You can get the Cause & Effect ppt here.

Reviewing Math Concepts

Use 'Witch Doctor' to review math! Find this a fun, cooperative lesson to review math concepts on my TpT site!

Before lesson begins, teacher needs to have a copy of the 'Witch Doctor' song by the Chipmunks. Students are paired up and move chairs so that one is facing the board and the other is not. Each pair needs one whiteboard & marker or paper to find answer.

Pairs walk around their two chairs in a circle while the music is being played. Once the music stops, they sit in whichever chair they are in front of. The person facing the board is the "patient" and other partner is the "doctor". The patient describes the problem they are having (the math problem!) and asks the doctor for help. The doctor cannot turn around the look at the board, they can only listen to what their patient tells them.

The doctor solves the problem as best as they can from the patient's description. After all the doctors have given their solutions, the teacher (head doctor) goes over the results with the group. The kids LOVE this activity!

Effort Field Trip

Today, we headed to Arrowhead to celebrate the awesome effort of our grade level!

We headed to their Science Sports Lab to check out their bioscience showcases!

Students played with a larger-than-life intestinal system of clear tubes and red balls as the "food" to go into the system. There was also a really cool elliptical machine hooked up to another elliptical machine with a skeleton on it. As the students worked on the machine, they could watch the skeleton move and see how bones move as we exercise!

Students were also able to create healthy meals and do a little cheering for the Chiefs!

We saw the Super Bowl trophy on our tour as well as getting thisclose to the field, but could go running it. It was awesome to have an inside look at the stadium!

Lamar Hunt, Jr. spoke to our group and we got to see the statue of his father, Lamar Hunt, Sr. Lamar Hunt, Sr. has done many, many wonderful things for the sport of football!

Lastly, this is the play the won the Chiefs the Super Bowl in 1965!

Bring on the Assessments, We're Ready!

Friday was our FINAL effort celebration before we start our Reading State Assessments on Monday. We had a grill-in (the snow kept us from a grill-out!) with hot dogs, chips, & cookies for dessert. To add to our celebration & in honor of Dr. Seuss's Birthday, we watched Horton Hears a Who. What a great Friday!

Assessment Kick-Off

WE ARE READY TO TAKLE THE TEST!

Today was our State Assessment Kick-Off Assembly! The students watched as the Gardner Edgerton Blazer Football Team show us some moves and got us pumped up for the tests.

Ms. Fretz & Mrs. Dwyer put in a lot of hard work to make this assembly a success and get our kids pumped up to TACKLE THE TEST!

We even got to watch the Blazer Cheerleaders perform one of their great routines!

Next, some of the non-testing teachers and specialists showed us their test-tackling and cheerleading moves!

WE'RE READY FOR THE READING & MATH ASSESSMENTS! BRING ON THE TESTS!!

State Assessments are Coming!

As we get ready for Kansas State Assessments, the students have learned many, many, many strategies that help them while testing. With all the rain we have had (and no snow!), we made a bulletin board to display our test taking tips.

Today, we filled our raindrops with tips for testing!
